What is a fire sprinkler system?

Automatic fire sprinklers are individually heat-activated, and tied into a network of piping with water under pressure. When the heat of a fire raises the sprinkler temperature to its operating point (usually 165ºF), a solder link will melt or a liquid-filled glass bulb will shatter to open that single sprinkler, releasing water directly over the source of the heat.

What is a fire alarm system?

A fire alarm system senses fire in a specific location using an initiating device that responds to the products of combustion by a fire. The initiating device is connected to and causes a signal at the Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP). The FACP senses the signal from the initiating device and in turn energizes the notification appliances to sound/display an alarm at the protected premises.
